Woody Plants
The backbone of every garden, woody plants provide structure, screening, shade, wildlife habitat and four-season interest. In addition to form, many species of trees and shrubs can enliven a garden with flowers, fruits, interesting bark and a variety of foliage shapes and colors. Below you'll find a list of some of the woody plants being offered at the nursery in 2026. Perennials aren't listed at this time.

Abies koreana ‘Ice Breaker’ 2014 Conifer of the Year This exceptional dwarf evergreen features recurved needles that prominently display the silvery-white undersides, adding both texture and color to the garden. Grows 2-3” per year. Excellent for smaller gardens. Sun to part shade. Zone 5.
Abies koreana ‘Silberlocke’ Exceptional cultivar of the Korean Fir. Plant features recurved needles with showy silver undersides. Pyramidal in form. Grows about 4-5" per year. Forms a small tree, up to 20'. Sun to part shade. Zone 4.

Acer palmatum ‘Crimson Queen’ Subtle and understated, ‘Crimson Queen’ features fine, feathery, rosy-red leaves and a horizontal, slightly pendulous habit of growth. Use as an accent or specimen. Grows wider than tall. Sun to part shade. Zone 5.
Acer palmatum ‘Fireglow’ Great small tree for areas with limited space. Habit is upright and rounded with coppery-red colored leaves in the spring turning burgundy as the season progresses. Fiery orange-red fall color. Grows to 12’ tall or more and about 10’ wide. Sun to part shade. Zone 5.
Acer shirasawanum ‘Johin’ Small tree notable for its early spring blend of yellow-green leaves infused with orange. As the season progresses, leaves change to purple-green and then green tinged with red. Fall color is a vibrant mix of red and orange. Excellent as a specimen for the small garden or mixed border. Acer palmatum ‘Waterfall’ Lovely dissected Japanese Maple with finely cut pale green foliage and a spreading mounded habit. Excellent for texture, near water, or in mixed plantings or containers. Sun to part shade. Zone 5.
Acer palmatum ‘Yatsubusa Kashima’ This dwarf maple features small green leaves with pink margins in spring. Light green in summer with bright orange-red fall color. Aronia ‘Lo Scape Snowfire’ Adaptable native cultivar is clothed in small white blossoms in spring followed later by blue berries prized by birds. Exceptional orange-red fall color. Tolerates dry sites. Grows to 5’. Sun to part shade. Zone 3.
Azalea kiusianum ‘White Form’ Ground hugging, semi-evergreen azalea bears white flowers in spring. Likes acidic, organically enriched, well-drained soil. Protect from winter sun and wind. Sun to part shade. Zone 5.
Azalea koromo ‘Shikibu’ Deciduous or semi-evergreen azalea features eye catching lavender-pink, strap-like flower petals in spring. Tends to grow wider than tall. Grows to about 2-3’. Likes a well-drained soil. Sun to part shade. Zone 5.
Azalea schlippenbachii Handsome deciduous azalea produces an abundance of clear pink trumpet-shaped blossoms in late spring. Upright and rounded in form with large, medium-green foliage. Fall color is an exceptional purple-red. Grows to 6’. Sun to part shade. Zone 4.
Azalea arborescens ‘Summer Parasol’ Compact deciduous azalea featuring fragrant white flowers in early summer. Fall color features a gorgeous mix of orange and red. Will do well in average to above average garden soil. Grows to around 3’. Part shade. Zone 5.
Bamboo - Fargesia rufa This tall, non-invasive, clump-forming bamboo grows 6’ tall in our climate. Effective as a garden specimen or screen. Best in part shade. Zone 4.
Betula nigra ‘Little King’ Interesting dwarf cultivar of the river birch. Exfoliating bark provides interest throughout the year. Compact habit lends itself to smaller landscapes. Grows to 15'. Very hardy and tolerant of moist soils. Sun to part shade. Zone 4.
Buddleia alternifolia ‘Mop Top’ Different from the more common B. davidii, Buddleia alternifolia features cascading limbs and lavender-pink flowers that appear in spring rather than summer. Grows to around 3’. Nice in the mixed border. Sun. Zone 4.
Buxus microphylla ‘Winter Gem’ Exceptional boxwood good for low hedges and garden accents. Small green leaves, dense habit and deep green color. Adaptable to different soil types. Grows about 3” per year. Sun to part shade. Zone 4.
Calycanthus floridus ‘Burgundy Spice’ This exceptional Sweet Shrub produces burgundy flowers beginning in late spring. A vigorous grower with large dark purple foliage. Excellent as a specimen or accent in a mixed border. Plant in average soil in full sun to part shade. Grows to 5’. Zone 5.

Carpinus caroliniana ‘Firespire’ Narrow form of the American Hornbeam. This small tree makes a great vertical accent for areas with limited space. Dense and slow growing with slightly twisted limbs and fiery red-orange fall color. Grows to 15’ or so. Sun to shade. Zone 4.
Cephalanthus occidentalis ‘Fiber Optics’ This dwarf upright selection features shiny green foliage and fragrant white, ball-like flowers in mid-summer followed by round red berries. Fall color is a mix of red and orange. Will tolerate moist soils. Grows to 5’. Native. Sun to part shade. Zone 5.
Cercis canadensis ‘Alley Cat’ Outstanding variegated Redbud cultivar. Heart shaped green leaves are splashed with white. Clusters of bright pink flowers line the stems in spring before the leaves emerge. Grows to 15’. Sun to part shade. Zone 5.

Clethra barbinervis Japanese Clethra. Versatile and under-used four-season shrub produces racemes of small white fragrant flowers in summer followed by a fall show of bright yellow foliage. Cornus kousa 'Elizabeth Lustgarten' Interesting cultivar notable for its weeping form. White flowers appear in early summer. Nice fall color in a mix of reds and purples. Four season interest. Height depends on staking. Full sun to part shade. Zone 5.
Cornus mas A very good tree for smaller landscapes, this Cornelian Cherry Dogwood bears sunny yellow flowers in early spring. Tart edible red fruits appear in late summer. Compact and rounded in form. Grows to about 15’. Sun to part shade. Zone 4.
Cornus sericea ‘Hedgerows Gold’ Showy red stems brighten the winter garden. Eye-catching variegated foliage features green leaves edged in gold. At 5-6’ tall, ‘Hedgerows Gold’ grows only about half as high as the species. Sun to part shade. Zone 3.
Cornus x ‘Stellar Pink’ This disease resistant dogwood features pink to pinkish-white flowers in late spring and a dense, upright habit of growth. In fall trees turn a showy purple-red. Sterile. Grows to 20’. Sun to part shade. Zone 5.
Cotinus coggygria ‘Grace’ Excellent choice for bringing color to the landscape. Rich dusty purple foliage and a dense stocky habit make this plant invaluable for adding contrast to the border. Hamamelis ’Jelena’ A harbinger of Spring, this lovely Witch Hazel cultivar bears coppery flowers in late winter. Upright in habit with spreading limbs. Fall color is often a mix of yellow and reds. Grows to 8’. Sun to part shade. Zone 5.

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Eclipse’ This new hydrangea features dramatic burgundy-black foliage – novel among big leaf hydrangeas. May produce cranberry-colored flowers depending on winter severity, but should be considered mostly for its foliage. Mounding habit. Grows to 3’. Part shade. Zone 5.
Hydrangea paniculata ‘Little Quickfire’ Dwarf form of Exceptional ‘Quickfire’. Bears cone-shaped white flowers beginning in late July. Among the earliest paniculatas to flower. Flowers mature to pink and persist for the rest of the season. Grows to 4’. Sun. Zone 4.
Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Gatsby’s Glow Ball’ Dwarf form of the choice Oakleaf Hydrangea. Smaller than the species, but with all of the same great attributes: exfoliating bark, exceptional purple-red fall color and long cone-shaped white flowers in summer that turn from white to lime green. Magnolia virginiana ‘Green Mile’ This small, semi-evergreen tree bears fragrant, creamy white flowers in summer. Narrow in outline, growing taller than wide to 25’. Sun to part shade. Zone 4.
Metasequoia glyptostroboides Exceptional deciduous conifer features feathery leaves all season long. Fast growing and somewhat pyramidal in outline. Excellent specimen for larger properties. Will thrive in moist soils, but also fares well in average soil. Sun to part shade. Hardy to zone 5.
Metasequoia glyptostroboides ‘Miss Grace’ This Dawn Redwood cultivar features soft, feathery green leaves on cinnamon-colored, pendulous limbs. Makes a nice four-season specimen. Tolerates a variety of soil types. Sun to part shade. Zone 5.
Oxydendrum arboreum The sourwood is an underused ornamental tree which brings white racemes of late summer flowers and dependable brilliant red fall color to the landscape. Pyramidal in form. Can grow to 20’ or more. Sun to part shade. Zone 4.
Parrotia persica ‘Persian Spire’ This is an upright growing tree, good for areas where space is limited. Green leaves have burgundy edges before turning all green in summer. Orange and gold fall color. Older trees develop nice exfoliating bark. Grows approximately 20’ tall x8’ wide. Sun to part shade. Zone 4.
